Differences in Chipset

The biggest difference between the HERO10 Black and the HERO9 Black lies in the chipset.

Both models are equipped with GoPro's proprietary SoC from the "GP" series. However, while the HERO9 features the first-generation "GP1" chipset, which has been used since the HERO6 series, the HERO10 comes with the upgraded "GP2" chipset.

The significant increase in processing power results in noticeable differences in video recording quality, as described below.

Differences in Video Recording Quality

The most notable difference between the HERO10 Black and the HERO9 Black is the video recording quality.

The HERO10 supports 5K video at a practical frame rate of 60fps and 120fps for lower resolutions, providing smooth video footage. In contrast, the HERO9 supports 5K video at up to 30fps and other resolutions at up to 60fps, resulting in a substantial difference in video quality.

However, for hobby use, 60fps or higher and 5K video might not be commonly used, which makes the HERO9 Black still an attractive device.

Differences in Maximum microSD Capacity

The HERO10 Black is the first GoPro series to support 512GB microSD cards. The HERO7 Black through HERO9 Black models support up to 256GB, so the difference is substantial — effectively doubling the storage capacity.

With a larger capacity, you can shoot for longer periods without needing to swap microSD cards or upload footage to the cloud.
