Differences in Image Quality and Shooting Features

The key difference between the HERO9 Black and HERO (2024) in terms of image quality is the ability to shoot in 5K. The HERO9 Black supports 5K recording, whereas the HERO (2024) does not. For other resolutions, the HERO (2024) is capped at a maximum of 30fps for most settings, so if you want to capture high-frame-rate videos, the HERO9 Black is the better option.

There are also differences in shooting features. The HERO9 Black is equipped with built-in stabilization through "HyperSmooth 3.0," whereas the HERO (2024) relies on the QUIK app for post-stabilization. Additionally, the HERO (2024) lacks support for loop recording and live streaming.

When it comes to compatible micro SD cards, the HERO (2024), part of the HERO13 generation, supports up to 1TB, while the HERO9 Black only supports up to 256GB. If you need large storage capacities, you should opt for the HERO (2024) or another GoPro model like the HERO12 or later, which also supports 1TB micro SD cards.

Presence of a Front Display

The HERO9 Black was the first GoPro in the HERO series to feature a color LCD on the front. This allows users to preview shots without needing to check the rear display, enhancing usability.

In contrast, the HERO (2024) does not come with a front display. For those who find the main display sufficient, this might not be an issue. However, if you use a chest mount or other setups where the front display would enhance usability, this could be a drawback.

Differences in Body Size and Weight

If body size and weight are important to you, the HERO (2024) is much smaller and lighter, about 40% less in both dimensions compared to the HERO9 Black.

While the HERO (2024) sacrifices some features in favor of its compact and lightweight design, it still offers enough functionality and performance for those who prefer a more "simple and easy" action camera experience. Therefore, if portability is a priority, the HERO (2024) may be the better choice.
